- Google is investing $40B over the next two years to build three AI-focused data center campuses in Texas—its largest investment in any US state.
- The new campuses will be located in Armstrong County (Texas Panhandle) and Haskell County (West Texas), with additional expansion in Midlothian and Red Oak near Dallas.
- Google is pairing its data center buildout with investments in the Texas power grid, clean energy projects, water conservation, and workforce training.
Google’s $40B Texas Bet
Google has unveiled plans to invest $40B in Texas through 2027, marking the company’s biggest state-level commitment to date, reports CoStar. The investment will fund the development of three new AI data center campuses: one in Armstrong County and two in Haskell County. It also includes expansions of existing facilities in Midlothian and Red Oak, near Dallas.
Texas: AI’s New Frontier
Texas continues to attract tech giants building next-generation AI infrastructure. The state’s abundant land, pro-business regulations, and expanding energy resources make it an ideal location. Oracle and Meta are also building AI data centers in the region. Goldman Sachs projects a 165% rise in data center power demand by 2030, driven by AI applications that require more energy than traditional cloud computing.

Beyond Data Centers
Google’s investment includes far-reaching initiatives aimed at reinforcing the state’s infrastructure and workforce:
- Energy and Water Stewardship: Google will co-locate one Haskell County data center with a solar and battery storage facility developed with Intersect and TPG Rise Climate. It has already contracted over 6,200 megawatts of new energy generation for the Texas grid.
- Water Conservation: New facilities will use air-cooling systems to reduce water consumption. Google is also supporting wetland restoration and freshwater delivery via a $2.6M contribution to Texas Water Trade.
- Agricultural Innovation: Over $2M will go toward regenerative farming and irrigation efficiency projects in partnership with Indigo Ag and N-Drip.
Upskilling The Workforce
With the growth in AI infrastructure comes a surge in demand for skilled labor. Google plans to support more than 1,700 electrical apprentices by 2030 through the Electrical Training Alliance and Google.org’s AI Opportunity Fund. A $7M grant package will fund AI-driven initiatives across healthcare, energy, and education—benefiting institutions like UT Austin, Texas Tech, and Houston City College.
Why It Matters
Google’s $40B Texas expansion goes beyond building data centers. It serves as a blueprint for AI infrastructure that combines energy sustainability, job creation, and community investment. As demand for AI capabilities accelerates, tech giants are racing to secure the physical and human capital needed to power the sector, with Texas emerging as a pivotal battleground.
What’s Next
The three new campuses are expected to be operational by the end of 2027. Google’s broader Texas initiatives, including a $30M Energy Impact Fund, will roll out through 2026 and beyond. With growing AI infrastructure demands and competition heating up, expect more large-scale investments to follow across the state and nationwide.
