- Microsoft will allocate $80B to data center development in 2025, a 44% increase from 2024, as it builds capacity for AI training and cloud-based applications.
- Over 50% of the investment will be directed to US-based projects, emphasizing domestic growth amid rising AI competition.
- The company’s aggressive data center expansion is fueled by its partnership with OpenAI and deals like a $10B agreement with AI cloud startup CoreWeave.
In a blog post, Microsoft (MSFT) President Brad Smith highlighted the company’s ambitious 2025 data center plans, with many funds allocated to expanding US facilities. According to Bisnow, the announcement follows a fiscal year in which Microsoft’s capital expenditures grew by 75%, primarily due to AI-related projects.
Microsoft’s investments include 5 gigawatts of existing data center capacity, with plans to add 1.5 gigawatts in H125. The firm also continues to deepen partnerships, including a notable infrastructure-sharing agreement with OpenAI.
Strategic AI Push and Policy Advocacy
Smith’s blog also urged the US government to foster a competitive environment for domestic AI growth. He emphasized the importance of swift data center permitting and pragmatic export controls to ensure American dominance in global AI markets.
“The United States cannot afford to slow its own private sector with heavy-handed regulations,” Smith wrote.
His statement reflects growing concerns about international competition, particularly with China, in the AI sector.
